A warm-toned beach and a graphic bunker: matt Aluminium Dibond preserves the fine texture of the sand and the concrete.

The story behind the photo
A concrete blockhouse has tipped off its footing and is sinking into the foreshore at an angle, half buried, with the flat sand running away from it in every direction. The title is not subtle and it does not need to be: a monument going under, and people walking past it as if it were a rock.
I framed with the bunker small and slightly right of centre, the sand taking up the entire foreground, and the horizon very high. The emptiness around it is doing the work: alone in the middle of a wide flat plane, the block looks abandoned rather than merely old.
The colour is almost gone, deliberately. Wet sand, grey sky, grey concrete, and two or three specks of red on distant walkers. Anything warmer would have made it a beach; this way it stays somewhere between landscape and archaeology.
These bunkers were built to look out to sea, and the sea has been quietly taking them back for eighty years. I am drawn to that reversal: a thing designed to be permanent, losing an argument with sand.
