The story behind the photo
Two people walking along the lower quay of the Seine towards the Louvre, framed under a bridge arch, with the long wall of the embankment running diagonally out of the foreground and the river flat beside it. The couple are tiny, far away and exactly on the line where the wall meets the light. The title plays on a second pair: on the river, two boats moored side by side are the couple floating, the two walkers the couple walking.
The arch does the framing, the wall does the leading, and the exposure does the rest. I metered for the far end of the quay and let the underside of the bridge go to solid black, which turns the opening into a proscenium: the lit strip is a stage and the two figures have walked onto it.
Black and white removes the only thing that would have distracted here, the green of the river. What remains is a study in three values: the black of the vault, the mid grey of the stone and the white of the sky at the end.
The lower quays are one of the few places in central Paris where you can walk for a kilometre without crossing a road. Everyone who uses them walks more slowly than they do up above.
I wanted a photograph of two people made small by a city and entirely unbothered by it.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
