The mirrored sphere of La Geode seen through the dark concrete frame of the Cite des Sciences, with an adult and a child walking across the opening in silhouette. The sphere fills the lit rectangle and returns the sky, the park and the building around it in one convex image.
The composition uses the architecture as a mask again, and here it earns it: the black frame removes every distraction and leaves a perfect circle in a perfect rectangle. The two walkers arrive at the lower left and give the geometry something human to measure against.
Exposing for the sphere means losing the interior entirely, which is what I wanted. The only tones in the picture are the polished steel, the pale ground, and black.
The Geode is a geodesic dome of six thousand triangles built in 1985 to hold a hemispherical cinema. From outside it is a mirror; from inside it is a planetarium. Children stand in front of it and wave at themselves.
I wanted an image that is almost entirely circle and rectangle, with two people walking through it on their way somewhere else.
