The story behind the photo
A cyclist standing with his bike against a wall of vertical wooden boards, looking through a small grilled opening in the panelling at the Eiffel Tower behind it. The wall fills the frame, the man is centred, and the only thing to see beyond the boards is the piece of the monument framed by that opening.
That little window is the whole joke and the whole point. The hoarding had been put up around works at the Trocadéro, hiding the view, and a small grilled opening in it gave onto the monument. A cyclist stopped in front of it exactly as one stops in front of a landmark.
I framed it flat and frontal, like a studio portrait, so the boards would read as a striped backdrop and only that small window would hint at what lies behind them. The absence of any horizon is what makes the image work.
The title is the date. Masks, a city under restrictions, a monument you could not approach, and a man out on his bike because it was one of the few things still allowed.
I wanted a photograph that will be completely incomprehensible in thirty years and completely obvious to anyone who was there.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
