Cut in the rock

The pink granite here is piled in rounded blocks, and the sea finds its way between them through a narrow channel that fills and empties with every swell. I framed straight down that channel so it opens at the bottom of the picture and closes at the lighthouse.
A long exposure turns the water in the cut into a pale turquoise blur while the boulders stay hard and grained. That contrast is the whole intention — everything mineral is absolutely still, everything liquid has no edges at all, and the two are separated by a line a few centimetres wide.
The Mean Ruz light sits on its rock in the upper third, built from the same granite as everything around it, which is why it belongs in the frame rather than decorating it. I kept it small. It is the destination, not the subject.
I shot at the end of the afternoon when the stone goes properly pink and the sky was still clean blue. The tide was coming in fast and the block I was standing on was an island by the time I packed up — a good reminder that on this coast the composition has a deadline.
