Track to the clouds

A rutted farm track climbs between two banks of rough grass and disappears over a low crest where a single tree stands. Above it, the whole sky was occupied by a slow grey-gold cloud mass with the last light underneath.
I framed upright and got low, so the two ruts open at the very bottom of the picture and narrow all the way to the crest. Everything in the lower two thirds is grass and track; the tree and the cloud share what is left.
I kept the ground dark and slightly cool against the warm sky. That separation is what gives the track its pull: the eye will always leave a dark foreground for a bright horizon, and the composition simply gets out of the way of that reflex.
These are the same fields as another frame in this collection, walked in the opposite direction on a different evening. A place with no features at all forces you to make the picture out of what you brought: a viewpoint, a format, and whatever the sky is doing.
