Sandwalk

A trail of footprints leads across the crest of the Dune du Pilat, Europe’s tallest sand dune, out toward the point where the sand drops away to the Banc d’Arguin below. I photographed this in May 2025 at sunset, just after a brief shower had left the surface faintly sheened, while the sky filled with a deep violet that seemed to hang just above the dune rather than behind it.
To the left, the dark line of the Landes forest held its ground against all that colour, and for a few minutes, the whole enormous shape of the dune felt like a held breath before the light let go. This is, to date, my most decorated single image.
