Frozen sunrise

The second morning of the year, in an open field at Les Mesnuls, a single bare tree stood alone against a sky that couldn’t decide between storm and gold: heavy grey cloud on one side, a hard sunburst breaking through low on the other. Every blade of grass and dead bramble in the foreground was stiff with frost, which is where the title comes from as much as the season.
I’ve photographed plenty of sunrises closer to home in the Yvelines, but this was one of those mornings where the weather did more of the work than I did. I just had to be standing in the right spot when it happened.
