The story behind the photo
On the second morning of the year, in an open field at Les Mesnuls, a bare tree stood alone against a sky that couldn’t decide between storm and gold: heavy grey cloud on one side, a hard sunburst breaking through low on the other. After a freezing night, every blade of grass and dead bramble in the foreground was stiff with frost, which is where the title comes from as much as the season.
I moved along the hedge until the sun sat well clear of the tree, and closed the aperture down until it broke into a star. The picture works at two colour temperatures at once, a warm point of light on one side and cold blue-grey frost across the whole ground, and I kept both rather than settling the white balance somewhere in the middle. That disagreement is what a winter sunrise actually looks like.
I’ve photographed plenty of sunrises, but this one, closer to home, at Les Mesnuls in the Yvelines, was one of those mornings when the weather did more of the work than I did. I just had to be standing in the right spot when it happened.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional.
For aluminium and acrylic: the photo seems to float inside its frame; black or white.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
