The story behind the photo
Each spring, for a few short weeks, the forest floor of Rambouillet turns into a haze of blue as the bluebells push up beneath the beech and oak canopy, before the leaves fully close overhead. I caught this one just as the morning light broke through, low and warm, with the last of the mist still hanging between the trunks. That light had already passed through the new beech leaves, so the blue arrives with a green cast over it.
I framed low, with a fern in the foreground and the carpet running back between the trunks. Backlight is the only way to photograph this: lit from the front, the flowers go flat and mauve; lit from behind, each stem becomes translucent and the whole ground seems to produce the light rather than receive it.
“Awakening” felt like the right word: for one narrow window each year, this ordinary stretch of forest turns into something closer to a fairy tale, then quietly goes back to being just trees for the other eleven months.
