Heron sunset

  • 📍 Location: Étang de Vaccarès, Camargue, France
  • 📅 Date: 2022

The sun was going down straight into the lagoon and had already flattened into an orange disc, cut in half by a low sandbar. On that bar, motionless, a heron stood in profile — one dark vertical in a picture made entirely of horizontals.

I used a long lens from the shore, which keeps the sun large and puts the bird at a size where its shape is unmistakable without any detail at all. Everything is silhouette and gradient: magenta above, rose across the water, one orange half-circle, one black bird.

The exposure is set for the sun, which means the lagoon loses its texture and becomes a sheet of colour. That is a loss I accepted willingly. The Camargue at this hour has no texture worth defending; it has light, and a great deal of space.

Herons are patient in a way I have never managed. I stood in the reeds for forty minutes hoping it would not move, and it did not — it outlasted me, the sun and the light, and was still standing there when I packed up in the dark.

Limited-edition fine-art print from the Skywaven Studios collection, available in several sizes, papers and framing options.
