The story behind the photo
Two walls of white limestone fall away on either side and leave a narrow V open to the sea. I framed from inside the cleft rather than from the viewpoint above it, so the rock occupies most of the picture and the horizon is granted only the gap it has earned.
The sun was low and slightly off centre, laying a pale gold band across the water and leaving a small island as a dark comma on the skyline. That island is what holds the composition together: it gives the empty middle distance a place to settle, and it sets the scale of the cliffs around me.
I exposed for the sky and let the limestone go cool and grey-blue in the shadow. The calanques are usually photographed for their turquoise; at this hour they are not turquoise at all but a study in stone against light, and I preferred the honesty of that.
Getting here means an hour of descent on loose white rock, and you arrive with dust on your hands and no way back before dark unless you started early. That effort is part of what I feel when I look at it: a place that gives nothing away to anyone who has not walked down into it.
