The story behind the photo
During the bluebell season, I framed this one low and close, letting the flowers fill the whole foreground while the trunks behind soften into a blur, so the blue would feel less like a carpet and more like something the forest itself was dreaming.
The blur comes from a deliberate vertical movement of the camera during a long exposure. The trunks become soft columns, the flowers a blue wash at ground level, and the green of the new leaves runs down through everything. The technique is simple and almost never works: I made several dozen frames that morning and kept one, the only one where a single trunk stayed dense enough to hold the picture together while everything around it dissolved.
The scene only lasts a few days a year before the flowers fade, which is part of why I go back to check on it every spring.
