The story behind the photo
In an open field near Rennemoulin, a single white door frame stands with nothing beside it: no wall, no house, just grass and open sky. Whatever purpose it may once have had is gone. It opens onto nothing and closes nothing off, and I framed it against the sky so that the absurdity is impossible to miss.
I found it at sunset, just as a wave of red cloud swept overhead, and this ordinary, forgotten object suddenly looked like a threshold into somewhere else entirely. I let the sunset stay soft and kept the door frame as the only hard object in the picture. Weathered white-painted wood against a coloured sky needs no help; adding contrast would have turned a quiet joke into a poster.
People who see this image almost always ask what is on the other side of the door, and I have come to enjoy the fact that I genuinely do not have an answer. It is one of the simplest compositions I have ever built a photograph around, and also one of those I am asked about most.
