The story behind the photo
Snow had fallen overnight and covered the lawn completely, and by mid-morning the sky was the same white as the ground. The result was a scene with almost no tone in it at all, and one bare tree standing in the middle of that nothing.
I exposed well to the right, pushing the whole image towards white, and let the background trees dissolve into the haze until they are barely more than a suggestion. Only the near tree keeps its structure: every twig drawn in a fine warm brown against the pale.
The picture is essentially a drawing. Once the snow removes the ground plane and the sky removes the horizon, what is left is line, and the composition is simply the shape the branches make. I framed to keep the crown whole and to leave empty space on both sides.
Snow this heavy reaches the Paris suburbs perhaps once a year, and for a few hours a park everybody knows becomes unrecognisable. I was out before the paths were walked on. The feeling of that morning was one of extraordinary quiet, and I wanted a picture with as little in it as the morning had.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional.
For aluminium and acrylic: the photo seems to float inside its frame; black or white.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
