The lone windmill amid the vines, composed from foreground to sky: Aluminium Dibond keeps the detail of the rows, and the white frame the light.

The story behind the photo
The mill sits alone on its knoll and everything around it is vineyard. I built the frame from the bottom up: a wide foreground of vine rows, then the slope, then the small dark silhouette on the crest, so that the whole lower half of the picture explains the upper half.
The rows run diagonally out of the corner and converge towards the mill, and that convergence is the composition. I walked the headland for a while to find the exact row that would point at the building rather than past it: a few metres either way and the lines miss, and the picture falls apart.
I worked in soft overcast light. Hard sun would have carved black shadows between the rows and broken the rhythm; under a high thin cloud the leaves stay uniformly green and the vineyard reads as texture, which lets the eye travel across it instead of stopping in it.
This mill has watched over the same slopes since the nineteenth century, and it survived a war as an observation post. Standing in the rows on a grey afternoon, I felt continuity more than beauty: the very ordinary fact of a place that keeps doing the same thing, year after year.
