The story behind the photo
That evening the sky went further than I have ever seen it go over this pond. The whole upper half of the frame turned to streaked red and violet, and the sun dropped into the exact notch between two dark masses of trees, throwing a pair of clean rays down onto the water.
I framed upright so that the sky could keep its full height and the reflection could take the bottom third without either being cropped. The far bank runs across the middle as a continuous black band, and the two lit rays pass through it: that is where the title comes from, and why the composition needed to be so symmetrical.
Everything is exposed for the sky. The trees, the near branches and the bank are pure silhouette, with no attempt to recover them. In a picture whose subject is a colour that lasted six minutes, detail in the shadows would have been a distraction and a small dishonesty.
This is a modest pond behind a suburban road, and for most of the year it looks like nothing at all. I had walked past it dozens of times. Then the sky did this, and I have rarely moved so fast to get a tripod out of a bag.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional.
For aluminium and acrylic: the photo seems to float inside its frame; black or white.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
