Spring flames

In early April 2025, a rapeseed field near Vert-le-Grand in the Essonne burst into that particular, almost unreasonable yellow that only lasts a few weeks each spring. A single bare tree stood at the field’s edge, its branches still leafless against a sky gone deep, saturated blue, gnarled and stark against all that colour.
The contrast between the two felt less like a photograph of spring than a photograph of the idea of spring. From a distance, the field genuinely looks like it’s on fire, which is where the title comes from.
