Dreamy falls

The water does not fall from one place here, it comes out of the whole rock face at once. Tufa builds up over centuries into a soft porous wall, the spring seeps through every part of it, and the result is a curtain of small falls rather than a single drop.
I framed wide and central to hold the entire spread, because the subject is the width of it — a dozen separate threads working in parallel. A tighter crop on any one of them would have been prettier and would have lost the point completely.
A few seconds of exposure smooths the threads into white silk and, more usefully, calms the pool at the bottom so the tangle of exposed roots stays readable. Those roots matter: they are the only hard, complicated shape in a picture otherwise made of moss and blur.
Everything here is green — moss on the rock, leaves above, light coming through both — and the place feels less like a waterfall than like the inside of something alive. I went in early to have it to myself, and the silence between the water and the trees is what I was really trying to bring back.
