Blocks of quartzite piled at the edge of the drop: Aluminium Dibond renders the texture of the rock with precision.

The story behind the photo

The quartzite here has split into enormous blocks stacked on top of one another, and one of them leans out over the edge in a shape the eye cannot help reading as a stooped figure. Local legend says the devil built this place in a single night and left it unfinished, and the rock does look like something caught mid-gesture.

I put the camera on the flat slab at the foot of the formation, so the stone fills the centre of the frame and the ground leads in from the bottom. Low and close, the block looms; from standing height it is just a large rock among trees.

The sun was setting exactly behind the gap between two blocks, and I waited for it to drop into the narrow slot and burst through as a single star. A small aperture keeps the rays clean and holds detail in the lit edge of the stone, and that edge is what stops the silhouette from turning into a flat cut-out.

It is a strange place to be alone at dusk. The Ardennes forest goes very quiet before dark, and standing under a leaning boulder the size of a house, waiting for a beam of light to line up, I understood why people needed a story to explain it.
