The story behind the photo
A shaft of sun had found its way down through the canopy and was sitting on one bank of the stream, on a stand of ferns growing out of the mossy boulders. Everything around it stayed in deep shade, which meant the picture composed itself: lit ferns, dark everything else.
I framed horizontally so the beam runs across the image rather than down it, and placed the stream low, along the bottom edge. The water is there to carry a little of that light back into the shadow and stop the lower third from closing up entirely.
I exposed for the highlights and let the shade fall where it wanted. Opening up would have shown a great deal more forest and destroyed the only thing worth having: the sense that the light is a visitor here and will be gone in ten minutes, which it was.
The gorge is narrow and the sun only reaches its floor for a short window in the middle of the day. I had scouted the spot the evening before, with no light at all, and coming back to find it exactly as I had imagined is a rare and very satisfying thing.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional.
For aluminium and acrylic: the photo seems to float inside its frame; black or white.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
