The story behind the photo
A stone tower with no sails left, standing on its own in a flat field with a line of trees behind it. Nothing about the building is dramatic; everything above it was. The cloud that afternoon was moving in heavy grey banks with a hard edge where the light got through.
I framed with the horizon very low and gave four fifths of the picture to the sky, because the sky was the event. The mill holds the bottom of the frame like a weight on a sheet of paper, and it is deliberately small.
I let the tones go cool and kept the contrast high in the cloud, which pushes the grass towards a dull green and the stone towards grey. This is not a warm picture and it should not be: the whole reason to photograph the place that day was the weather coming.
Mills like this are all over this plateau, most of them roofless and most of them ignored. I have a weakness for buildings that have lost their function and stayed standing anyway, and I photograph them the way you would photograph someone who has stopped explaining themselves.
