Circle of light

A farm track cuts straight through the fields and ends at a single tree on the horizon. The land here has nothing else to offer — no relief, no feature, no help — so the whole photograph rests on one line and one silhouette, and on the sky agreeing to do the rest.
That evening the cloud broke into long streaks that radiated outward and seemed to turn around a point just above the tree. I set the horizon low, at roughly a fifth of the frame, and gave the rest to the sky, because the sky was the event and the ground was only its stage.
I kept the treatment restrained. The colours are muted on purpose — ochre grass, grey-blue cloud, a thin warm seam at the horizon — so the image holds together as a structure rather than shouting as a sunset. Saturating this would have made it a postcard.
These are the fields I walk when I have an hour and nowhere in particular to go. Photographing them has taught me more than any trip: when a place gives you almost nothing, you stop waiting for the subject to arrive and you start building the picture yourself.
