Cape pine

One pine has grown out over the edge of the cape, pushed sideways by decades of mistral until its whole crown leans downwind. It is the only living thing on this shelf of rock, and the composition was decided the moment I saw it: the tree on the right, the coastline running away on the left, the sun landing between them.
I placed the camera low on the bare limestone so the foreground slab reads as a surface you could walk on. It also drops the horizon, which lets the pine stand against open sky rather than against the hillside behind it — the difference between a tree in a landscape and a tree that owns one.
The light at this hour is doing something particular on this coast. The cliffs are ochre and the sea is already dark, so the warm band across the water is narrow and the rest of the frame settles into deep blue-green. I underexposed slightly to keep that band from spreading.
Cap Canaille is the highest sea cliff in France and the wind up there never fully stops. Holding a tripod steady, watching a tree that has spent its life being pushed, I had the clear sense that the pine was the one with the better technique.
