Lightened forest

In the first days of September, a thin morning mist settled over the forest of Rambouillet and turned the light silvery and soft, filtering it between a stand of ancient oak trunks until each one seemed to glow faintly from within. The bark was still damp from the night before, deepening every brown and green.
The whole clearing held the particular hush of a place caught between seasons: summer not quite finished, autumn not yet arrived, everything paused for one morning in between.
