The Gourgue d’Asque gorge in every shade of green: acrylic glass gives these greens their depth and the water its sparkle.

The story behind the photo
Further along the same stretch of the Gourgue d’Asque in the Pyrénées, the river narrows and slows, and the whole gorge turns into a single study in green: moss on every rock, ferns unfurling at the waterline, filtered light dropping through a dense canopy overhead. By the time it reaches the water, that light has passed through several layers of leaves, so every tone in the frame is a shade of green.
I framed this one low and close, letting the ferns in the foreground anchor the eye before it travels back into the mist and deeper shadow beyond, and tried to fit in as many of those greens as I could. An exposure of a second or so keeps the water soft without flattening it.
The picture is my argument that a single colour, given enough values, is enough to build a photograph. The place itself is one of the wildest, quietest corners I’ve ever stood in, and one of the hardest to leave.
