A path of fallen leaves runs the whole depth of the frame and ends at a small classical pavilion whose arch has been left open. Everything in the picture is russet (the ground, the canopy, the stone itself under that light) so the one cool bright note, the daylight standing inside the arch, becomes the only place the eye can go.
I centred the building deliberately. Symmetry is usually a risk, but here the wood closes in from both sides like a nave and the composition was already an architecture before I arrived; refusing it would have been a pose. The path narrows, the trees lean in, and the arch sits at the vanishing point where it belongs.
A single figure stands in the doorway, small enough to be almost missed. I waited for that. Without a person the arch is a ruin; with one it becomes a threshold, and the picture changes from a description of autumn into a question about what is on the other side.
The pavilion was built for an emperor and now stands alone in a forest that has quietly taken the grounds back. I came for the colour and stayed for that: the particular calm of a place that has outlived its purpose and is doing perfectly well without it.
