Emerging rocks

The tide was low and going out, and one flat rock sat alone on the sand with the swell still washing around it. I framed it low in the picture, slightly off centre, and gave everything above it to water, headland and sky.
The exposure runs long enough that the sea loses all of its surface. What is left is a pale grey plane with no waves in it, and against that the rock stops being a rock among many and becomes the single solid fact in the frame. Long exposure is often used to make water pretty; here it is used to make it absent.
The colour is almost gone too. A thin orange seam along the horizon, a headland in silhouette, and everything else a range of blue-greys. I kept it that way in the edit, because the scene was that quiet and adding warmth would have been a lie about the temperature.
Quiberon at the end of the day empties completely. Standing in ankle-deep water watching a thirty-second exposure count down, with nothing moving except the light draining out of the sky, is the closest thing I have to a reason for doing this at all.
