Golden Gate waves

The story behind the photo

As the sun went down over San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge held on to the last of the warm light while the sky behind it slid from lavender into deep blue. Its orange-red towers glowed against that cooling sky in a contrast I couldn’t resist trying to capture properly.

The composition is vertical and built on two dark rocks, the nearer one in the lower third, with the swell arriving diagonally behind it and the bridge kept deliberately small at the top. Almost everything in the foreground is moving; the two rocks are the only fixed points, and the eye returns to them before climbing towards the towers. Had I stepped back and given the bridge more room, the picture would have become a view rather than an encounter.

I left the shutter open long enough for the waves below to blur into silky white trails against the dark rocks, so that the whole scene would feel suspended rather than frozen: one bridge, one tide, one particular evening that will never happen in quite the same way again.

The exposure time was chosen, not maximised: short enough to keep the shape of the breaking wave, because a swell that dissolves completely into fog loses the direction of the sea. Finding that narrow window, somewhere around a second, takes a dozen attempts while the light falls.
