My advice for this photo

Material
Fine art paper · baryta
Framing
Classic frame · Wood · Oak · up to Large

A forest already bare, on a carpet of brown, in very restrained tones: baryta paper gives these browns relief, and the oak frame echoes them.

The story behind the photo

The wood had already turned. Every tree was bare, the ground was a flat brown carpet, and the whole scene had settled into the grey-brown that lasts from November until March. One young tree in the middle of it was still fully in leaf, and burning orange.

I framed it dead centre, which I almost never do. Here the symmetry is the argument: the picture is about one thing being different from everything around it, and putting it anywhere else would have weakened the isolation.

The exposure is held down so the leaf litter and the trunks stay dark and muted. The small tree is the only saturated object in the frame, and I did nothing to bring the rest up to meet it. A photograph about a single exception should not be generous to the rule.

There is something slightly comic about a tree that has not noticed the season is over, and something moving about it too. I stood there longer than the picture needed, mostly because I did not want to walk away from the last colour in the forest.

Materials

Fine art paperfrom 195 €

Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.

Aluminium Dibondfrom 300 €

Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.

Acrylic glassfrom 425 €

Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.

Framing, optional

Classic framefrom 225 €

For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.

Floater framefrom 150 €

For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.

Subframefrom 85 €

For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
