Path of giants

The granite here has broken into blocks the size of houses and they have come to rest against each other in a jumble, with the river running underneath them out of sight. Moss has taken every surface, and oaks have grown up in whatever gaps were left.
I framed upright with a rough path entering at the bottom and disappearing between two of the largest boulders. The path is essential: it makes the chaos navigable, and it gives a sense of human scale to a place that otherwise reads as an abstract pile of green shapes.
The light is entirely indirect, filtered twice through the canopy and then through moss, which is why everything in the frame is a version of green. I did not correct that cast. It is what the forest looks like, and neutralising it would have made the picture accurate and dead.
Every civilisation that has lived here has explained this chaos with giants, and standing at the bottom of it you understand why: the blocks are simply the wrong size for the landscape. That mismatch is what I was photographing.
