The story behind the photo
Cloud had filled the valley completely and was sitting level, and only one ridge of spruce was still above it: a narrow dark band floating in a white with no top, no bottom and no horizon anywhere.
I framed it small and centred in an almost empty picture. Everything depends on restraint here: crop in any closer and the trees become a landscape with a foreground, and the illusion of something suspended in nothing disappears.
I exposed well to the right so the cloud goes to near-white and keeps no texture at all. That is the opposite of what one normally wants from mist, and it is the entire technique of the image: I am not photographing weather, I am photographing a shape with the weather removed.
You get perhaps ten minutes of this before the inversion lifts or breaks up, and I had been standing in the cold for an hour with nothing to show for it. When the cloud finally levelled off, the picture was already composed in my head and I only had to be quick.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional.
For aluminium and acrylic: the photo seems to float inside its frame; black or white.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
