Two people leaning on the railing at the top of the cape, watching the sun go down over the Channel. It had already flattened into a band rather than a disc, and a single small boat was crossing the light.
I stayed well behind them and framed low so the railing runs as a thin horizontal across the bottom third and the two silhouettes stand against nothing but sky and sea. Photographed from the side they would have been a couple; from directly behind they become two shapes looking in the same direction, which is a different and better picture.
Everything is exposed for the horizon, so the cliff, the railing and the figures are black. The only information in the frame is a gradient of orange and the small dark interruption of the boat.
I do not usually photograph people and I did not ask these two. They were there for the same reason I was, they had no idea I was behind them, and it seemed fairer to keep them anonymous than to make them pose.
Limited-edition fine-art print from the Skywaven Studios collection, available in several sizes, papers and framing options.
