The same meadow at the end of the day, photographed from much lower down. The camera is almost in the grass, so the nearest buttercups stand large against a sky that had gone pink and blue with broken cloud, and the leaning pine is now a silhouette on the skyline.
Dropping to ground level changes everything. The flowers stop being a surface and become individual objects, the grass behind them goes dark, and the picture divides into a busy black-and-gold foreground and an open sky — the opposite of the daylight version of this field.
I exposed for the sky and let the meadow fall. Only the flowers closest to the lens keep their colour, lit by the last direct light coming in low across the grass; everything past them is a dark green mass.
Two frames of one meadow, taken hours apart, that share nothing but their subject. Standing in the same place at a different time is the cheapest way I know of making a genuinely different photograph.
