The wolf’s gaze and the detail of its coat: baryta paper keeps them precise; the grey frame stays discreet around the tawny tones.

The story behind the photo
A wolf in the Pyrenees, lying along a rock with his chin almost at ground level and his eyes fixed on something outside the frame. The composition is deliberately tight: the head fills the left of the picture, the body leaves by the right edge, and the line of the muzzle and the line of the gaze point together at a subject we are never shown. What is missing carries the whole photograph.
I worked at the animal’s own height rather than above him. Photographed from above, a lying wolf looks resigned; photographed from his level, he looks like what he is, an animal in the middle of a calculation. The soft green behind him comes from a long focal length and says only that there is a meadow back there, which is all it needs to say.
The light arrives low and from the side, running along the top of the skull and the guard hairs of the shoulder and leaving the underside of the jaw in shadow. Thanks to it, the coat reads as grey rather than simply dark.
What struck me was the patience. Everything in the posture says rest, and everything in the eye says the opposite. I wanted the print to hold both at once, because that contradiction is the animal itself.
