Clinging the trunk

A red squirrel stopped mid-climb on the trunk of an old oak in the Parc de Sceaux one spring morning, a nut held tight in its mouth, and looked straight back at me before I’d even finished raising the camera. The Parc, better known for its formal gardens and its château, has quieter corners too, and its older trees are full of exactly this kind of everyday wildlife if you’re patient enough to wait for it.
Fresh spring canopy overhead filtered the light into a soft halo around the squirrel’s small frame, and for one suspended second, neither of us moved. It’s a small, unplanned encounter, the kind the park offers often if you walk slowly enough to actually notice it.
