A kestrel on a stem, against a dark, plain background: baryta paper gives this background its depth and the plumage its detail.

The story behind the photo
A kestrel at Rennemoulin, in the Yvelines, perched on a thin curved stem that bends slightly under its weight, against a uniform dark green background. The bird is small in the frame, alert, turned three-quarters away, and the whole composition is held by a single line: the branch, rising from the bottom left, with the bird at its end like a note at the end of a phrase.
I wanted that fragility to be legible. A kestrel hunting from a perch chooses the most exposed and least stable support available, because what it needs is a view rather than comfort. Photographing it on a thick, solid branch would have said the opposite of the truth.
The background is a hedge in full shade, thrown completely out of focus by a long lens and a wide aperture. It gives a deep, even green that behaves like studio paper: no texture, no distraction, nothing to compete with the barred tail and the ochre of the back.
Kestrels are the falcon everybody has seen and nobody looks at, hovering over motorway verges, so ordinary that they have become invisible. Photographing one properly is partly an argument: this is a bird of prey through and through, and the fact that it is common changes nothing.
I wanted a quiet print, one line and one bird, and the patience of a hunter that spends most of its life waiting.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
