Deer in shadows

A red deer stag in the forest of Rambouillet, standing on the only patch of ground the light has reached, with the wood behind him closing into darkness. The picture is composed entirely on that ratio: a very small lit area, a very large dark one, and an animal occupying the border.
I exposed for the highlights and let the rest go. The instinct is always to open up and recover the forest, and it is always wrong. A wood at that hour is a mass of shadow with holes in it, and rendering it honestly means accepting that three quarters of the frame carries no information at all. The darkness here is not a technical accident, it is the subject.
The light is low, warm and lateral, and it slides between the trunks rather than falling from above, which is why it lights the flank and the legs and leaves the back in shade. That reversal, a dark top and a lit underside, is what gives the animal his strange weightlessness.
Rambouillet has been managed for centuries, and it is not a wilderness. That is precisely what makes the encounter interesting: this is a forest with roads and forestry markers and joggers at the edges, and a red deer stag standing in it as though nothing had changed since the sixteenth century.
I wanted a print in which the animal has to be looked for, and in which the shadow is the larger half of the story.
