The story behind the photo
Three sunflower heads at the front of the frame, all turned the same way, with the rest of the field falling away behind them and a clean blue sky above with a few flat white clouds. Yellow against blue, and nothing else asked to do any work.
I framed low and close, so the nearest heads are almost life size and the field compresses behind them into a continuous yellow mass. One step back and the picture becomes an agricultural landscape; from here it stays a portrait of three flowers with a crowd behind them.
The light was overhead and hard, normally the worst possible conditions. For this subject they are the right ones: sunflowers are thick and sculptural, they take direct sun without washing out, and only harsh light gives the blue that saturation.
A whole field of flowers all facing the same direction is a genuinely strange thing to stand in. I photographed them from the front, the way you would photograph a group of people, because that is more or less what it feels like.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
