The story behind the photo
Low tide had left the beach in long, flat bands of wet sand and standing water, and the setting sun was repeating itself in every one of them. Counting from the horizon, the disc appears three times before it reaches the bottom of the frame.
I framed upright so all of those repetitions would fit, and composed so that a single standing figure sits right in the middle band. That silhouette turns a set of reflections into a place: it gives the sand a scale and tells you the bands are puddles and not clouds.
The exposure is judged entirely on the sun, which leaves the beach in deep amber and the figure in solid black. This is not a subtle picture and it was not a subtle evening: the whole coast turns that colour for about ten minutes and then goes grey.
I did not arrange the person. They walked out, stopped and stood there long enough for me to make three frames. Waiting for a stranger to place themselves correctly is an unreliable method, and when it works it beats anything I could have staged.
