The whole picture is made of about six colours and none of them is strong. Peach at the top, mauve along the hills across the bay, pink in the wet sand, a cool grey in the shadowed water — a set of shades rather than a set of contrasts, which is where the title comes from.
I framed with the waterline running in from the left and a long tidal pool opening in the middle of the beach, so the sky is returned twice: once by the sea and once by the still water inland of it. That second reflection is the shape that holds the lower half of the frame together.
A woman is walking at the edge of the surf, small and almost lost against the foam. She is the only dark thing in the picture and the only thing moving in it, and her footprints run back out of the bottom corner — so the image contains both where she is and where she has been.
The Espiguette is a long sand spit with nothing built on it, and at this hour it empties out completely. Photographing it is mostly a matter of not adding anything: no filter, no pushed saturation, no drama. The coast was already doing something quiet and extremely precise, and the job was to stay out of its way.
