Daisy path

The daisies were not scattered across the meadow, they were following something — an old track, a change in the soil, I never found out which. They ran through the grass in a single curving line, and a line like that through an empty field is a gift you simply accept.
I got low and close to the nearest flowers so they stand large in the foreground and the curve narrows as it retreats. The line then carries the eye from the bottom corner to the crest, where the ground falls away into haze and the far volcanic summit rises out of it.
The light was soft and slightly cool, early enough that the valleys were still full of mist. I wanted that flatness: hard sun would have made the white petals glare and burned the delicate separation between one grey ridge and the next.
This is old volcano country, rounded and gentle now, and it does not look dramatic at first. I spent an evening walking it before I saw the line of flowers, and that is usually how it goes — the picture is already there, and the work is only to stop being in a hurry.
