Deer in the dark

A red deer stag crossing the forest of Rambouillet during the rut, walking through a stand of birch and pine at the one moment when a shaft of light reaches the ground. Everything around him is closed and dark; he is passing through the only open door in the wood.
The composition depends entirely on that beam. The stag is placed where the light is, slightly left of centre, moving towards the empty part of the frame, and the vertical trunks around him act as bars through which the scene is glimpsed rather than observed. I did not lighten the shadows afterwards. In a forest at the end of the day the eye sees exactly this: a lit animal and an unreadable surrounding, and any attempt to recover detail in the darkness would have destroyed the reason for the photograph.
The light is low, late and directional, and it strikes the flank and the antlers from behind, drawing a bright line along the back and leaving the chest in shadow. It is the light of the last twenty minutes, the same light that starts the bellowing.
Rambouillet in October is not a silent place. You hear the stags long before you see them, a low roar that seems to come from the ground itself, and you learn to walk in the direction of a sound rather than of an animal.
I wanted a photograph of an apparition rather than of a specimen: a forest that hides almost everything, and one animal accidentally illuminated.
