Two trees on the horizon of a bright yellow rapeseed field: acrylic glass gives the yellow and the sky their full intensity.

The story behind the photo
The same field, the following spring, and this time two trees rather than one. They stand apart on the horizon, one slightly larger than the other, and that small inequality makes them a pair rather than a repetition.
I framed them well apart and away from the centre, leaving a wide gap of empty horizon between them. The space between two objects is a subject in its own right, and the whole picture is built to give that space room to be noticed.
Everything else is held exactly as before: flat yellow below, flat blue above, no cloud, no foreground incident. The identical treatment is deliberate. With the setting held constant, the difference between one tree and two becomes the only thing the eye has to think about.
I went back for this on purpose, a year later, to the same field in the same season. There is a kind of picture you can only make on a second visit, and it is one of the reasons I photograph a small number of places many times instead of many places once.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
