Lonely hare

A brown hare in a green field at Andelu, in the Yvelines, alone in an expanse of young crop that fills the frame from edge to edge. No hedge, no sky, no horizon: a uniform green surface and one animal placed in it.
The composition is an exercise in isolation. The hare is small, set slightly off centre, and there is nothing else in the picture to look at, which means the eye has no choice but to measure the emptiness around it. That emptiness is the subject. A hare in open country is precisely this, a solitary shape a long way from any cover, relying entirely on stillness and then on speed.
The light is soft and even, without direct sun, which keeps the green from separating into burnt highlights and dead shadows and allows the fawn of the coat to hold its value against it. Flat light is often treated as a failure; on a monochrome field it is the only light that preserves the subtlety of a single tone.
Hares do not flee immediately. They flatten, they wait, they let you come closer than you expect, and at some invisible threshold they simply leave, at a speed that makes the whole previous stillness look like a bluff. I photographed this one just before the threshold.
I wanted a print that is almost entirely field, and an animal you understand to be alone.
