The story behind the photo
The little temple bridge on the pond at Bonnelles in late autumn, with the woods behind it in full copper and the whole scene repeated upside down in the water. The folly sits exactly in the middle of the frame, small, symmetrical and slightly absurd, and everything else in the picture is there to look at it.
I centred it on purpose. This is a built object designed to be admired from a distance, and refusing the symmetry would have been a photographer’s affectation. What breaks the mirror is the surface of the pond, which is not quite still: the reflection is softened and stretched, so the upper half of the picture is architecture and the lower half is painting.
The light is grey and low in contrast, and that is what allows the colour. Direct autumn sun would have blown the oranges into a single hot mass; under cloud, the wood separates into four or five distinct browns and reds, and the pale stone of the arch holds its value against them.
These nineteenth-century estate follies were built for walks, conversation and a certain amount of showing off. They now stand mostly empty at the end of ponds, in woods that the public walks through without knowing whose idea they were.
I wanted a photograph of a small ornamental gesture left to age in a real forest, and of the season that suits it best.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
