The story behind the photo
An angular overhang of the Philharmonie cuts across the top of the frame, with a bright wedge of paving below it and a lone figure walking through the lit area, his shadow stretched out behind him. The geometry is aggressive and the human element deliberately minor.
Three shapes and nothing else: a black triangle, a grey trapezoid, a white strip. I moved until those three occupied the frame in that order, then waited for someone to cross the white. The building does not need to be recognisable for the picture to work, so none of it is shown whole.
The light is late-afternoon and very low, and it produces a shadow longer than the man who casts it. That shadow is the second subject, and it is the reason the figure is placed on the left rather than the right: it needs room to fall.
There is a real pleasure in photographing a concert hall in complete silence, from outside, where the only rhythm available is the one the sun is drawing on the ground.
I wanted a photograph that behaves like a piece of music it cannot contain: structure, interval, and one voice.
