The point breaks up into a line of jagged rocks that run out into the water and then stop, and beyond them the Vieille light stands on its own reef. At sunset the whole ridge goes dark and the sea between the teeth turns a pale metallic rose.
I framed from above and slightly along the ridge, so the rocks make a diagonal from the bottom left out towards the lighthouse. That diagonal is the only structure the picture has; head on, the point is a confusing pile and nothing leads anywhere.
I kept the exposure down to protect the colour in the sky and let the rock go almost black. There is very little detail in the foreground and that is intentional — at this hour the point really is a silhouette, and pretending otherwise would have made a duller and less accurate image.
This is the strait where the current runs hardest on the whole coast, and even from the cliff you can see the water arguing with itself around the reef. Photographing something that violent at its calmest-looking moment is a small pleasure of its own.
