Tulips seen from below, like flames: acrylic glass makes the red luminous and the shadows deep.

The story behind the photo

I put the camera on the soil between two rows and shot upwards, so the tulips stand over the lens rather than in front of it. From down there they are no longer a crop laid out in lines: they are a group of shapes rising against the sky, which is where the title comes from.

The weather did the rest: heavy grey cloud with hard edges, and enough light leaking through to keep the petals lit from behind. Red against grey is one of the strongest pairings there is, and the storm sky gave it to me without any help.

A wide lens very close exaggerates the nearest blooms and lets the row fall away quickly behind them. I kept a shallow strip of green leaves along the bottom so the flowers are attached to something; without it they float, and the picture becomes a graphic rather than a photograph.

The Dutch bulb fields are enormous, flat and completely regular, and the standard picture of them is taken from a distance, with a drone. Lying in the dirt in one row, looking up, felt like the only way to make something that was mine.

Materials

Fine art paperfrom 195 €

Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.

Aluminium Dibondfrom 300 €

Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.

Acrylic glassfrom 425 €

Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.

Framing, optional

Classic framefrom 225 €

For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.

Floater framefrom 150 €

For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.

Subframefrom 85 €

For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
