Sunset pair

Two small trees stand on the horizon at the far end of the rows, a good distance apart, and the sky behind them had gone a heavy gold with a bank of cloud lying flat above the skyline.
I stood in the axis of the furrows so the rows converge towards the gap between the two trees rather than towards either one. That is the whole decision in this picture: the vanishing point is empty, and the eye ends up looking at the space the two trees define.
The lavender is deep and slightly cool at this hour, almost blue in the troughs, and the sky above is warm. I kept that opposition rather than balancing it out — the field and the sky are genuinely different temperatures at sunset, and the picture is better for admitting it.
I have photographed this plateau at first light, in the middle of the day and at dusk, and the evening version is the one that feels least like a postcard. The colour is harder, the rows go dark, and the place stops being charming.
