A black woodpecker clinging to a birch: baryta paper keeps the black of the plumage and the detail of the bark, and the oak frame suits the forest.

The story behind the photo
A black woodpecker on a birch trunk in the forest of Rambouillet, clinging vertically in the classic posture of the species, tail braced against the bark. The frame is vertical to match, and the trunk cuts it in two: pale bark on one side, a field of luminous green on the other, with the bird placed exactly on the border between them.
Everything here is a matter of contrast. The black woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in Europe: crow-sized, entirely black apart from a scarlet crown. Against white birch bark in full spring light, that becomes an almost graphic opposition of tonal values. I exposed to protect the sunlit grass behind, which drops the bird into near-silhouette and leaves only the red of the head and the pale eye to give it life.
The light is high and clear, filtered through young leaves, and it is the bright green of the background that makes the picture. Photographed against the wood, this bird disappears; against the illuminated understorey, it becomes a silhouette anyone can read at twenty metres.
You hear this species long before you see it: first the hammering, which carries further than that of any other woodpecker, then the loud, plaintive call crossing the canopy. Finding the bird itself is a matter of walking towards a sound and hoping it does not move.
I wanted the print to hold the vertical logic of the animal: a bird that lives on a wall, in a frame built like a wall.
